BEIJING (AP) — A public bus in eastern China caught fire Wednesday in what was likely arson, killing one person and injuring 19 others, a local state-run newspaper reported.
The blaze is at least the fifth bus fire this year in China. Several public attacks in recent years, including bus arson and hackings, have been blamed on people who are mentally unstable or who are seeking revenge against society.
Few details were available on the latest bus fire in the port city of Yantai in Shandong province. The Qilu Evening News said it was likely arson and that one person was killed and 19 injured.
In July, a man burned a bus in the southern city of Guangzhou, killing two people and injuring 32. Police said the suspect was angry after he lost money gambling.
Also in July, another man set ablaze a bus in the eastern city of Hangzhou, injuring dozens. Police said the arsonist was upset with the society.
In May, a bus in the southwest city of Yibin caught fire, killing one man believed to be the arsonist.
In February, a man said by police to have believed his wife was unfaithful burned a bus in the southwestern city of Guiyang, killing six passengers.
